Millington, TN is a suburb of Memphis with a lot to offer. It is convenient to convenient to the Memphis International Airport and downtown Memphis and is a wonderful place to live, work and play in its own right. With changing weather each season, you can watch the leaves fall in the autumn and the flowers grow in the spring. This is a great place to raise a family and an ideal place for commuters in and out of Memphis.
Millington itself is quite culturally diverse and is full of food, fun and friendly people. There is a lot to do in this relatively small town. Playhouse 51 is the local community theatre in town and is a wonderful place to take in some performing arts. It is located within the town’s civic center and puts on 4 shows annually. It is a prime example of this area’s commitment and interest in the performing arts. Also in the area, in nearby Germantown, is The Germantown Performing Arts Center (or GPAC). Opened in 1994, this multidisciplinary performing arts complex kicked off with a bang with a performance by local legend Ray Charles and has been going strong ever since. Year-round, they hold classes and activities for children as well as performances and more. This is an ideal place to spend any day or evening but, in particular, it would be a wonderful way to pass a cold, snowy Tennessee evening.
No discussion of Memphis local arts would be complete without the mention Graceland, the former home of Rock and Roll legend Elvis Presley. It is brimming with local music history and is a local landmark. However, it is also a national landmark and people come from far and wide to take tours. Every year, in August, on the anniversary of his death there is a procession through the estate and past Mr. Presley’s grave. The largest turn out for this event was in 2002, the 25th anniversary of his death. It was unseasonably rainy for August, which is typically hot and dry, that day but that did not deter Rock and Roll fans one bit. It is estimated that 40,000 people were in attendance.
The Old Millington Winery is a small, family-owned winery in Millington which was established in 2000. There you can, of course, taste wines and enjoy delicious snacks. You can also tour the winery and the vineyard and there are often events at the winery. It is a great way to spend a cool autumn evening or a warm spring afternoon.
